Or so a politician claimed some years back. This actually originated back in the 1800's when tavern owners offered a "free lunch", but put so much salt in the food that patrons then needed a gallon of beer to quench their thirst, so, "no such thing as a free lunch".
But on Wednesday August 17th, 2022 we will be providing a "FREE LUNCH' for all Men's Shed members who register and attend our SPANNER IN THE WORKS (free men's health check}. An AMSA (Australian Men's Shed Association) project for Men's Health.
The health check involves: Hearing Tests, Sleep Apnea testing, and a consultation with a volunteer registered nurse who will conduct Blood Pressure testing, and an informal conversation about general health matters. No invasive procedures or needles will be used, and all information is confidential with you and the nurse.
Unlike our medical system - with over worked Doctors - there is no time restraints, so if there is a particular problem you want addressed, the volunteer nurses will have the necessary empathy to help with your concerns. A "Spanner in the Works" manual will be provided to all participants.
Any information gathered, recommendations, advice, referrals, etc., will be between you and the nurse, and will not be shared or forwarded to anyone in the Torquay Men's Shed, VMSA (Victorian Men's Shed Association) or AMSA.
We expect the day to be run from 9.00am till 4.00pm with a lunch break from 12.30pm to 1.00pm. Tea and coffee will be served throughout the day.
We will have a guest speaker from Offshore Physiotherapy (at our lunch break) to discuss the benefits of exercise: in helping prevent falls in our old age, and to improve our lifestyle. He will be showing how exercise helps in the management of Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Back Pain, and other Physical Ailments, and also how exercise can improve our Mental and Physical Wellbeing.
We are so Happy and Grateful to our sponsors who are contributing to make this a successful day for MENS HEALTH.
Surf Coast Shire have waived the fee for the Elderly Citizens Hall where it will be conducted, and also will be providing the catering for our FREE LUNCH.
Ben Featherston of Surf Coast Hearing Clinic has kindly offered $500.00 to be used as our committee decides.
The Nurses who will be volunteering their services for the day.
